Biosketch:

Melinda Maggard, M.D., M.S.H.S. is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She received her B.S. in bioengineering from the University of Washington and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. After completing her general surgery residency at UCLA, she was then accepted in the VA/Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Fellowship Program and obtained a Master of Science in Health Services at UCLA.  Dr. Maggard practices general surgery at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, which is part of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.

Dr. Maggard helped found the Center for Surgical Outcomes and Quality (CSOQ) at UCLA and currently serves as the Deputy Director.  Her main research interests focus on studying and improving the quality of care for surgical disorders – specifically bariatric surgery. She has an adjunct appointment at RAND Health and has worked on several projects with the Southern California Evidence-based Practice Center, one comparing the surgical and non-surgical treatments of obesity and a current project assessing the maternal and neonatal outcomes following bariatric surgery.

Her Physician Faculty Scholars Program project was titled "Multidisciplinary Approach To Improving Outcomes Following Bariatric Surgery" and aimed to identify the key components to optimizing success following this elective surgery. Factors associated with achieving greater weight loss and the control of obesity-related comorbidities were studied.

Dr. Maggard now calls Southern California home, but misses the green of the Pacific Northwest. She lives here with her husband, two young children, and their two Labrador Retrievers.
